It’s time to highlight a few more new releases this week! I know you’re just as excited as I am about that. First, though, let’s talk about hold boxes at Game Haven Sandy.
Now’s the time to set up a hold box at Game Haven! It ensures you get the comics you want each month without worrying about selling out. It gets you a 10% discount on all your comics related purchases if you put at least 10 titles on your hold box list. And, if you had a hold box at another store- maybe a store that closed recently, for example- we’ll waive the $10 deposit! Just show us a receipt or something from the other store to show you had been buying your comics over there. We’ll help you make Game Haven Sandy your new comic destination!
What’s new to come grab this week? Here’s a few highlights…
From DC: “THE WAR OF JOKES AND RIDDLES” part five! It’s tough to beat the two biggest puzzlemakers in the world at their own game, and Batman’s gambits have only pulled him deeper into the moral quagmire where the Riddler and The Joker do their dirty work. All of Gotham City hangs in the balance as Batman faces the ultimate conundrum: are brainteasers better than belly laughs?
Dave says: Is part 5 too late to jump in? Absolutely not! The recap will get you up to speed, and we even have some of the previous parts in stock. This has been a very fun story arc, and a great example of the current Batman creative team under “Rebirth”.
Harley Quinn #28
From DC: “Vote Harley” part one! The corrupt mayor of New York City has been a thorn in Harley’s side since the day he stepped into office…and now he’s crossed the line one time too many! Harley’s usual methods of dealing with problems like this have failed her, so it’s time for a more unconventional solution…is New York City ready for Mayor Harley Quinn? It better be!
Dave says: Harley can be a just a little polarizing, but the numbers don’t lie: most people love her. Her solo comic is always a fun mix of funny and action packed. She’s tried her hand at a number of things since she went solo, so why not have her run for office, too? Could she do any worse than other mayors have? Bonus points- DC Comics prefer to have most their stories take place in fictional cities, like Gotham and Metropolis. A story arc with a real city like NYC being at the heart of the story is fairly uncommon for this publisher.
Justice League #29
From DC: “LEGACY” part four! The deadly motivation behind the League’s future children is revealed, and the League will have none of it. For the children have targeted a current League member for assassination! And it’s not at all who you think!
Dave says: If you’ve been reading this arc so far, it’s not really a shock that the children were leaving some info out. But who are they here to kill? You’ll never guess!
I mean, it’s like 1 in 7 odds to guess right, of course you could probably guess. But read it, instead!
All New Guardians of the Galaxy #10
From Marvel: The Guardians have been caught between the Collector and the Grandmaster, between the Raptors and the Novas, between being “heroes” and getting paid – but between you and me, they might need to work things out between themselves…
Dave says: Don’t let the trippy cover dissuade you, if you haven’t started reading Guardians of the Galaxy. The core team from the movie is here, plus some other characters you’ll like. The “flavor” or theme from the movies is here, so if you loved the films and wonder about reading the comics, dive right in. I can help bring you up to speed on anything you have questions about!
Doctor Strange #25
From Marvel: EXTRA-SIZED 25TH ISSUE! A mysterious foe that Strange BARELY defeated in his past comes back to haunt Strange’s present and finds him MUCH weaker. Uh-oh!
Dave says: I can’t stress enough how good this current series has been. If you’re a fan of the character- even if you only know him from Benedryl Cabbagepatch’s film last year- you’re missing out. The creative team here has the character pegged, and has been doing a great job. #25 here is a great place to jump aboard- it’s going to keep being great from here.
Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #4
From Marvel: A classic villain has reinvented himself, and it does not bode well for Spider-Man! And what is J. JONAH JAMESON up to NOW?!
Dave says: Spectacular has been off to a good start so far. Dan Slott has taken Peter Parker to an interesting place over the last few years, and this new book (from Chip Zdarsky) kind of picks up and runs with that. If you’ve been enjoying Amazing, you should still feel at home here. If you’re a Spider-Man fan and want to get into some Spidey comics, I do recommend starting with the “flagship” title, The Amazing Spider-Man, to get a feel for where the character and mythos is right now, and then jump into titles like this one to expand. Or, if you’re like me and Spider-Man is your favorite, why not both?
Don’t forget, this is just a sampling of some of the dozens of awesome books we got this week. Come check it out, set up a hold box, and geek out with us over at Game Haven Sandy! We’re working hard to become your main comic book destination!
